How do the articles exemplified the ways in which language reinforces or thwarts gender roles?

From the article, I learned that the in India the gender roles are from special from all the other countries. Their long rooted conception for the gender roles makes women very vunerable in the society. It seems that the equality between man and women is constantly being approached, however, only the efforts from the government are not big enough to change the social norm. Man still did not realize that the severe consequences they are producing when they rape.  They still have the sense that man is socially more protected and superior than women is. The article itself suggested that women itself should take the blame too because they do not behave right, which induces the man to rape.

Gender and Language

1.Which aspects of gender roles are true everywhere?
Gender roles varies in different cultures so it is really hard to find the aspects gender roles that are true for everywhere. However, if we trace back to history, there are lots cultural misconceptions that indicated that women are weaker than man and are less dependable. Almost, in every history, women became educated later than man did.

2.Which are specific to your culture
In China, women are traditionally thought to be more dependent on man. They usually are responsible for the domestic jobs such as taking care of children's. However, As the time pasts, the segeregation line between man and women are blurred. More and more women go to work and start to be responsible for sustaining the well-being of their family.

3.How does language reinforce or create or thwart those gender roles?
I think language do shape those gender roles. In lots of the families, boys and girls were taught by their parents or adults from a early age about how to act. Those language have clearly impacted on children's mind. Also, mass media also play a big role in shaping public opinion toward gender role. For example, girls are told to better be skinny if they want to look good. There are also languages that thwarts the traditional view in gender, now there are lots of ideas that advocate the importance of being independent for a women.
